Brighton Science’s Senior Physicist, Joann Hilman, has been appointed chair of the Structural Adhesives Division of The Adhesion Society, one of the organization’s three divisions dedicated to advancing the science of adhesion. The Structural Adhesives Division focuses on critical topics like fracture mechanics, contamination, formulation, processing, and surface preparation of adhesives. Hilman, elected to this position in 2024, will serve a one-year term, during which she will oversee Division programming for the 2025 Adhesion Society Annual Meeting in February and lead the Structural Adhesives Division meeting at the conference.

At the 2024 meeting, the Adhesives Division saw higher attendance, with presentations on topics like fracture mechanics, adhesive performance in transportation, and contamination challenges such as ice water and insect debris. Joint sessions addressed emerging trends, including 3D printing challenges, high-throughput analysis, machine learning applications, and advanced tools and methods for adhesion characterization. The Adhesion Society’s Annual Meeting continues to be a vital platform for learning about advances and innovations within the field.

With years of experience as a Senior Physicist at Brighton Science’s Materials and Processes Lab, Joann brings in-depth knowledge of surface treatments and remediation techniques to her new role. She works with clients across industries to diagnose adhesion failures, develop optimized cleaning and treatment methods, and select materials and processes that ensure robust adhesion. Her expertise will be invaluable in guiding discussions and developments within the Structural Adhesives Division.
